Resistors for Medical & Imaging

Medical imaging and life-support equipment subject resistors to combined HV stress and ME (medical electrical) safety requirements. X-ray generator anode supplies use 70–150 kV resistor dividers with TCR < 25 ppm/°C and voltage coefficient < 1 ppm/V. MRI gradient amplifiers dissipate up to 30 kW peak in damping resistors during slew-rate transitions. External defibrillators store 360 J in a 32 µF capacitor and use a current-limiting / discharge resistor of 50 Ω rated at 10 kV impulse. Ventilator blower drives, ECMO pumps and surgical lasers also rely on snubber and brake resistors. Compliance includes IEC 60601-1 (general safety), IEC 60601-1-2 (EMC), IEC 60601-2-44 (CT), IEC 60601-2-33 (MRI) and ISO 13485 quality system. Hongyi supplies ISO 13485-traceable parts with full risk-management file per ISO 14971 to FDA QSR and EU MDR submissions.

Key Requirements

Key Requirements

  • IEC 60601-1 ed.3.2 working voltage and MOPP (means of patient protection) compliance
  • X-ray HV divider TCR < 25 ppm/°C and VCR < 1 ppm/V for stable kVp accuracy
  • Defibrillator pulse rating 10 kV / 50 µs / 360 J single-shot capability
  • ISO 13485 design-history file with biocompatibility cross-reference if surface-contact
  • EMC compliance to CISPR 11 Group 1 Class A radiated and conducted
How to Select

How to Select

  1. Specify HV divider with paired matched-pair TCR tracking ≤ 5 ppm/°C for kVp ratiometric stability
  2. Confirm partial-discharge inception ≥ 1.2× rated voltage per IEC 60270
  3. Select non-magnetic materials (no nickel cores) for MRI bore-side parts
  4. Validate single-pulse failure mode is open-circuit (not flash-over) for defibrillator safety
  5. Demand UDI labeling and lot traceability for FDA / MDR post-market surveillance

Frequently asked questions

Are your medical-grade resistors ISO 13485 traceable?
Yes. Our medical resistor line is built in a segregated cell operating under ISO 13485:2016 QMS. Each lot carries a Device Master Record reference, raw-material certificates of analysis, in-process IQC/IPQC records, and a Certificate of Conformity tied to the customer's part number. The DHF can be audited remotely or on-site as part of MDSAP or FDA inspections.
Can you supply non-magnetic resistors for MRI bore-side gradient amplifiers?
Yes. Our non-magnetic series replaces nickel-plated terminations and ferrous bracketry with copper / brass / aluminum and 316L stainless. Residual permeability is < 1.005 measured per ASTM A342 at 3 T. Typical use is in MRI room cabinets carrying 30 A gradient drive at 800 V slew. Specify part suffix /NM when ordering.
How do I verify the pulse rating for a defibrillator discharge resistor?
Compute pulse energy E = ½ × C × V². A 360 J monophasic defibrillator at 5 kV with 32 µF capacitor gives 400 J theoretical, derated 80%. Our 50 Ω 10 kV pulse resistor is tested at 500 J single-shot, 100 shots/min for 60 minutes, with R-shift < 0.5%. Datasheet includes 10/1000 µs impulse curve and IEC 60601-2-4 Figure 201.102 compliance evidence.
Do you provide an ISO 14971 risk-management contribution for our submission?
Yes. We provide a component-level hazard analysis covering failure modes (open, short, drift, surface breakdown), severity / probability scoring, mitigation evidence (X-ray inspection, 100% high-pot, conformal coating), and a residual-risk statement. This document slots directly into your device hazard analysis with cross-references to design-output specifications.
