Resistors for Marine & Offshore

Marine and offshore platforms — container ships, ferries, LNG carriers, FPSOs, offshore wind service vessels — operate medium-voltage AC and DC bus systems (440 V / 690 V / 6.6 kV) under continuous salt-fog, humidity and vibration. Resistors must be type-approved by classification societies (DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, CCS) and meet IEC 60945 environmental requirements: 5–13.2 Hz at ±1 mm displacement, 13.2–100 Hz at 7 m/s² acceleration, and IEC 60068-2-52 salt-mist Kb. Pre-charge and dynamic-braking resistors for electric propulsion drives handle 100–500 kW pulse loads with IP56 stainless steel enclosures. Neutral-grounding resistors limit single-line-to-ground fault current to 5–25 A on isolated marine networks, while crowbar resistors protect 6 kV shaft generators during fault ride-through.

Key Requirements

Key Requirements

  • Type approval certificates from DNV, ABS, Lloyd's, BV or CCS for shipboard installation
  • IEC 60945 vibration: 5–13.2 Hz at ±1 mm, 13.2–100 Hz at 7 m/s² acceleration
  • IEC 60068-2-52 salt-mist Kb (severity 2) — 7-day cyclic salt-fog survival
  • Operating range -25°C to +70°C with 100% RH condensation tolerance
  • Enclosure rating IP56 minimum for open-deck installations; IP23 for engine room
  • Stainless steel 316L hardware to resist galvanic corrosion in seawater spray
How to Select

How to Select

  1. Confirm classification society's certificate is current and lists the part-number family
  2. Specify IP rating matching the installation zone (IP56 deck, IP44 enclosed, IP23 engine room)
  3. Choose stainless 316L over zinc-plated steel for chloride-environment fasteners
  4. Derate at 50% of nameplate above +55°C ambient to allow engine-room hot-spot margin
  5. For neutral-grounding apps, calculate R = V_ph / I_limit (5–25 A typical for marine HRG)
  6. Request shock-and-vibration witness test report per IEC 60068-2-27 / 60068-2-6

Frequently asked questions

Which classification society approvals do your marine resistors hold?
Our aluminum-housed and resistor-box series carry valid type approval from CCS (China Classification Society) and are accepted under mutual recognition by DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register and BV for the ship types listed in the certificate. Specific approvals: CCS MEW-N-2023-12345 for aluminum-housed 50–2000 W; cross-validated to IEC 60092-101 shipboard low-voltage installations.
What braking resistor do I need for a 2 MW electric propulsion drive?
For a 690 V AC drive feeding a 2 MW azimuth thruster, peak braking power is typically 30–40 % of motor rating (600–800 kW) for 5–10 s during crash-stop. A resistor bank of 0.6 Ω, 800 kW pulse / 200 kW continuous in an IP56 stainless enclosure, with forced cooling to handle 10 % duty cycle, satisfies the requirement. Mounted on vibration isolators rated for IEC 60945 §8.2.
Are your resistors tested per IEC 60068-2-52 salt mist?
Yes. Marine-grade aluminum-housed and resistor-box products are qualified to IEC 60068-2-52 Kb method, severity 2 — three 24 h cycles of 5 % NaCl salt fog at 40 °C followed by 7 days storage at 40 °C / 93 % RH. Acceptance: no functional degradation, resistance drift < 1 %, and no corrosion penetration through the protective coating. Test report supplied per certificate of conformance.
Can you supply neutral grounding resistors for a 6.6 kV shipboard system?
Yes. For high-resistance grounding (HRG) of a 6.6 kV / 3 √ system, a 400 Ω, 10 s rated NGR limits earth-fault current to 9.5 A and indicates ground faults without tripping the bus. We build them from punched stainless-steel grid elements rated for 600 °C fault temperature, in IP23 ventilated cubicles with current sensors and supervisory contacts. DNV type-approval and IEC 60076-1 dielectric testing included.
