
Resistors for Marine & Offshore
Marine and offshore platforms — container ships, ferries, LNG carriers, FPSOs, offshore wind service vessels — operate medium-voltage AC and DC bus systems (440 V / 690 V / 6.6 kV) under continuous salt-fog, humidity and vibration. Resistors must be type-approved by classification societies (DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, CCS) and meet IEC 60945 environmental requirements: 5–13.2 Hz at ±1 mm displacement, 13.2–100 Hz at 7 m/s² acceleration, and IEC 60068-2-52 salt-mist Kb. Pre-charge and dynamic-braking resistors for electric propulsion drives handle 100–500 kW pulse loads with IP56 stainless steel enclosures. Neutral-grounding resistors limit single-line-to-ground fault current to 5–25 A on isolated marine networks, while crowbar resistors protect 6 kV shaft generators during fault ride-through.

How to Select
- Confirm classification society's certificate is current and lists the part-number family
- Specify IP rating matching the installation zone (IP56 deck, IP44 enclosed, IP23 engine room)
- Choose stainless 316L over zinc-plated steel for chloride-environment fasteners
- Derate at 50% of nameplate above +55°C ambient to allow engine-room hot-spot margin
- For neutral-grounding apps, calculate R = V_ph / I_limit (5–25 A typical for marine HRG)
- Request shock-and-vibration witness test report per IEC 60068-2-27 / 60068-2-6
