Resistors for Telecom & Data Center

Telecom central offices and hyperscale data centers consume 1–100 MW per site and rely on resistors throughout the power chain. Rotary-UPS and battery-UPS systems (200 kVA–2 MVA) use pre-charge resistors (10–50 Ω, 500–2000 W) to limit DC-link inrush, and dynamic-braking resistors to dissipate regenerative energy. 5G base-station rectifiers operate on -48 V DC plant per ETSI EN 300 132-2, with 25 mΩ–10 mΩ shunt resistors monitoring battery-string current at ±0.25 % accuracy. Server-rack DC-DC converters require AEC-Q200-equivalent current-sense and snubber resistors operating at 105 °C ambient. Surge-protection resistors paired with GDTs and TVS clamp lightning per ITU-T K.20 (10 kA 8/20 µs) at the BTS antenna interface. All telecom resistors must pass GR-1089 Issue 7 NEBS Level 3 fire / safety testing.

Key Requirements

Key Requirements

  • NEBS Level 3 (Telcordia GR-63-CORE / GR-1089-CORE) fire and safety compliance
  • ETSI EN 300 132-2 / -3 compatibility for -48 V DC and 400 V DC central-office power
  • Surge withstand 10 kA 8/20 µs per ITU-T K.20 at antenna and copper-port interfaces
  • Shunt resistors with ±0.25 % tolerance, 15 ppm/°C TCR for battery-string monitoring
  • Continuous operation at 105 °C ambient inside sealed outdoor cabinets and IT racks
  • MTBF ≥ 1 × 10⁹ hours per Telcordia SR-332 for 20-year service life
How to Select

How to Select

  1. Match resistor IP rating to cabinet class — IP55 outdoor, IP20 server rack, IP31 telecom shelf
  2. For -48 V DC plant, specify low-EMI non-inductive wirewound or thick-film to meet ITU-T K.48
  3. Size pre-charge τ = R × C so 5τ < 500 ms UPS contactor closure (typical 200 kVA UPS)
  4. Verify flammability per UL 94 V-0 for in-cabinet placement near battery cells
  5. Request NEBS Level 3 fire-spread test report and earthquake zone 4 shock data
  6. Use four-terminal Kelvin shunts for currents > 50 A to eliminate trace-resistance error

Frequently asked questions

Are your power resistors NEBS Level 3 compliant for telecom installation?
Yes. Our aluminum-housed and resistor-box products are tested per Telcordia GR-63-CORE Issue 5 (fire resistance, earthquake zone 4 shock) and GR-1089-CORE Issue 7 (EMI, ESD, surge). Fire-spread per UL 94 V-0 plus the GR-63 self-extinguishing test. We supply a complete NEBS compliance pack including test lab certificates from independent third-party labs (e.g., Element, NTS).
What shunt resistor accuracy is required for monitoring a 48 V battery string?
Telecom-grade battery monitors typically require ±0.25 % initial tolerance with ±15 ppm/°C TCR over -40 °C to +85 °C to maintain ±1 % overall current-measurement error. For a 600 A string monitor, a 100 µΩ, four-terminal Manganin shunt rated 60 W gives 60 mV full-scale and 0.36 W self-heating at peak — comfortably within thermal limits when mounted on the standard 250 × 80 mm copper busbar.
Do you supply 48 V DC pre-charge resistors for a 1 MW data-center UPS?
Yes. Modern 1 MW UPS designs use 800 V DC link rather than 48 V; we ship 5 Ω, 2 kW pulse / 200 W continuous aluminum-housed resistors that pre-charge a 20 mF link in 100 ms (5τ). For legacy -48 V battery-disconnect inrush limiting, 0.1 Ω, 500 W cement resistors are standard. Both options carry GR-1089 surge-immunity test reports and are stocked at our Suzhou and Shenzhen warehouses for 1-week lead time.
How do you handle surge protection at a 5G base station antenna feed?
We supply a coordinated SPD chain: a gas discharge tube (GDT) provides the bulk discharge path, followed by a 1–10 Ω, 500 W fuse-resistor that limits follow-current and decouples the GDT from a downstream TVS clamp. The resistor must pass 10 kA 8/20 µs and 100 A 10/700 µs per ITU-T K.20 without open-circuiting. Our fuse-resistor series is stocked in radial and SMD packages with controlled 4–8 ms fuse-time at 25× rated current.
