
Resistors for Renewable Energy
Renewable plants combine fast-switching power electronics with multi-megawatt energy flows, exposing resistors to extreme pulse-energy and DC-arc stresses. Wind turbines use pitch-system dynamic-braking resistors (typ. 3–30 Ω, 25–100 kW continuous) and DFIG crowbar resistors that absorb rotor energy during LVRT events per IEC 61400-21. PV string and central inverters depend on pre-charge, discharge, MPPT damping and PID-mitigation resistors at 1500 VDC. Battery-energy-storage (BESS) containers require pre-charge banks for several MJ of capacitor energy and NER (neutral earthing resistors) for the LV ring. How to Select
- Match crowbar resistance to rotor short-circuit current at LVRT depth (typ. 0.1–0.5 Ω at 690 V)
- Verify single-pulse capability ≥ 1.5× the worst-case stored DC-link energy
- Select stainless-steel housing or marine-grade aluminum for offshore wind
- Specify thermal switch + RTD redundancy with SIL-2 wiring for safety chain
- Confirm 25-year humidity test 85°C / 85% RH 1000 h and IEC 60068-2-52 corrosion
