IATF 16949
IATF 16949 is the global automotive quality management system standard, built on ISO 9001 and adding sector-specific requirements (PPAP, APQP, FMEA, statistical process control) that suppliers to automotive OEMs must follow.
Definition
IATF 16949 is published by the International Automotive Task Force — a body bringing together American (GM, Ford, FCA), European (BMW, Daimler, Renault, Stellantis, VW) and increasingly Asian automakers. It supersedes the older ISO/TS 16949 (2002, 2009) and is mandatory in the automotive supply chain at all tiers, from Tier-1 ECU integrators down to resistor and connector makers.
Beyond ISO 9001's generic quality system clauses (leadership commitment, risk management, internal audits), IATF 16949 adds: APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning — five-phase project structure with formal gates), PPAP (Production Part Approval Process — 18 elements of documentation including PFMEA, control plan, gauge studies, capability indices Cpk ≥ 1.67, samples and warrants signed off before mass production), Process FMEA, control plans, statistical process control on identified special characteristics, traceability (every part back to its raw materials and production lot), corrective-action management with structured 8D reports, and OEM customer-specific requirements such as Ford CSR, GM 1927-15, and CRRC.
Achieving and maintaining IATF 16949 certification is non-trivial — annual surveillance audits, sample submission to an IATF-accredited registrar, mandatory PPAP for every part-number change.
